The Origins of Silk Screen Printing Practices (written for Quick T-shirt Printing)

What oil paints and easels were to the Renaissance period, silk screening and t-shirts are for the modern era. Silk screening, screen-printing, or serigraphy has turned art from something we look at into something we wear.

The silk screening technique has been around for centuries. It’s a simple method that involves stretching a piece of fabric over a frame and pressing a screen and stencil filled with ink on it. The development was revolutionized by a couple of early-20th century artists named Samuel Simon and John Pilsworth.

Silk-screening, as an art form, came to be used during the Art Deco and Art Nouveau movement. During that time, silk-screening came to be acknowledged as serigraphy. Serigraphy is a process that uses a synthetic material such as polyester, photo emulsions, and other dry-film applications to produce a reusable screen. Because of these improvements to silk screening, techniques in serigraphy became the bedrock for techniques used in the printing industry.

Today, there are millions of designs, logos, and slogans that are screen-printed on t-shirts, bags, signs, and numerous other things. Screen-printing has become the method of choice for transferring your image on to your product.
